Mary a member of the digital history older peoples group has spoken to us many times of her mums memories of ‘flatties’ house boat communities who lived and worked on the Leeds and Liverpool Canal whose children her mum used to play with when she was a child probably around 1915. There was a branch of the canal which flowed into Charter’s Street, Vauxhall not far from Chisenhale Street under which the canal used to run.

She found this amazing 1836 map whilst looking on the internet which clearly shows that branch of the canal as well as the extension which went down as far as Pall Mall and Great Howard Street Gaol. It also shows that much of what is there today is either not developed or only partially so including Dublin Street which later became the home of so many Irish Migrants to the city.
