We made a special trip to visit West Derby as part of our research for the project. West Derby is an ancient village and settlement in-land from Kirkdale and Vauxhall which includes buildings which may have also been a feature in the ancient village of Kirkdale which was on the site of what is now the football pits.

Stephen Guy treated us to a special talk and tour of the courthouse which dates back to the 17th Century but which continued to be used right up until the mid 1800’s.

People didn’t get sent to prison from this court – it was a civil court really which generally fined people at the very worst or gave out permits for farming certain land.
